House renovation - need Oak doors & lightings

Hi I am looking for nice looking oak (colour) doors. Can someone recommend where I could get these at reasonable price. I also need this in georgian french doors for the through lounge and a sliding door to go in between kitchen and dining. I would be grateful for any recommendations.

Also need some nice looking light fitments for the through lounge, like chandaliers or modern chrome flush type, as we have low ceiling and matching side wall lights as well. Wonder if anyone could recommend some reasonable priced shops/website??

Finally, just want to ask some advice on interior design. I am going to have oak floor and oak doors, do I have to have the door architrave & skirting board in oak as well? would it look alright if I just went for white?

Would be grateful for any recommendation/advice. Thank you so much.

Wickes 4 panel oak veneer door £80
  • I don't like the veneered doors ..the veneer is paper thin probably less than 1mm.

One mistake with fitting them..for example fitting them too close, so that you have to sand the side where it tight against the jam..and you are going to be through that veneer..youre stuffed.

Knock the Hoover against them ..veneer will be damaged.

Get the bottom wet somehow ..and you wont be able to sand off the damage.

if you need to strip them in the future it cant be done without being very very careful

Trouble is in the shops now... diy chains ...door chain stores etc ..there don't seem to be any solid doors any more ..

I had mine made by a professional joinery firm ..cost £180 each plus the glass...but you then have a lifetime product that can be repaired if you damage it ..and wont show your mistakes.

if you don't intend to stay in your house for many years..and are an expert at fitting them, get veneered.

    all the best.markj

Howdens. The new Victorian Style four panels we picked up recently for a project for about £55+VAT, iirc. The older style four panel is more expensive (I suspect around £80+VAT) and will be comparable to a six panel (Georgian). We've lived with Howdens veneered doors for some time now and they're lovely to live with. I've certainly had no problems to speak of at all, there is some leeway on the edges, and we did a lot of trimming to fit our wonky house! I'm also pretty gung-ho with our very heavy Dyson. Life's too short to be careful with a hoover!

Nigh on impossible to find matching wall and ceiling lights, let alone decent quality at a reasonable price. I either do the sales at House of Fraser and John Lewis (where I have picked up amazing bargains that are still sold for a lot more than I've paid!) or out of sale season I've picked up stuff from Focus which I find to be generally expensive as the "sheds" go, but much more reasonably priced than the others on lighting. But my fail-safe has to be Next of all places. A lot of places don't do wall lights at all any more, but next has a small, but pretty selection. In the latest house we mixed the 3 tier wall light with the Zion crystal pendant thing and people are always asking where they're from :)

Finally, just want to ask some advice on interior design. I am going to have oak floor and oak doors, do I have to have the door architrave & skirting board in oak as well? No. would it look alright if I just went for white? YES! I promise! Buy MDF as it won't be liable to warping and paints easily - no knotting coming through after time.

Would be grateful for any recommendation/advice. Thank you so much.
