Hi, computer running slow at the moment for no apparent reason. Did a malware check - which came up clear, tried to run Hijack this (on vista) which it says right click to run as admin. When I right click it just opens normally. However, the scan then stops and advises
"For some reason your system denied access to hosts file... etc."
so I did as advised and put: notepad C: backslash (by backslash isn't working on keyboard!) and I get this:
Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
When I try to save my hijack this log - the folder is empty. Help!
Thanks.

The contents look OK for Vista, but are you looking in the right place for your HOSTS file? For Vista it should be in the folder:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
it should have the name hosts - not hosts.sam0 -
Can you post the malwarebytes log up please (Under LOGS tab at the top and pick the relevant scan date).
For now, I would ignore that the hosts can't be read and press OK or something similar and let it run. Can you post a log of this?0 -
Whilst pressing the SHIFT key, RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (Admin):idea:0
-
Thanks - that did it! (I looked under C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\ and it was empty!aliEnRIK: Whilst pressing the SHIFT key, RIGHT CLICK and select RUN AS (Admin)
Anyway - result is below. The problem has been firefox not responding or taking a long time to respond, and generally being slow.

pay particular attention to point 5 and 6
is internet explorer slow, if not, backup your bookmarks, and reinstall firefox!!

Your main problem by far is you have both Mcrapee AND Avira running
Mcrapee is slow anyways so id recommend uninstalling that and using the removal tool:idea:0 -
...and Rapport really ought to be binned
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

thanks - for some reason McAfee was running and avira had been stopped - (I didn't do it!). I uninstalled McAfee and it seems a lot better ... and taken Rapport off as well. Thanks as ever guys.Bern :j0
