You will need to inform local building control what you are doing. They will almost certainly insist on you getting structural calculations done by a structural engineer to determine the size of lintel and seating. It's a straighforward job for a builder but has disasterous consequnces if not done right.0

I am afraid there are too many unknowns for any one on a forum to give even a "guesstimate" for the work involved..

why don't you giv your local authority a call and ask their advice?
it all depends where you live, in Scotland you may have to enage the servicies of a company that have a certifier of design.baldly going on...0 -
If you are installing an rsj I'm told that it must be painted with a fire retardant paint and covered by 2 layers of plaster board. I'm sure there are other things as well but just a bit of knowledge for you when you do get it sorted, Sorry i cant comment on prices.0

we've just done this. We removed a load-bearing wall and made an opening of 6 ft. We involved the buildings inspector and sought advise about the size of the RSJ. We were informed to insert a 7ft beam supported by engineering bricks. The building inspector oversaw the project but we didn't have to paint with fire retardant paint or cover with double plasterboard. We only covered with single plasterboard then skimmed over with plaster. It's been signed off as job well done.
Oh, the beam cost us £70.0
