Oh no im in trouble.Pet related

Im renting a property that stated no pets, however when my gran was taken ill I started looking after her pet yorkie a few days a week. She is now in a home and I have the dog virtually all the time.Recieved a letter from the letting agents giving me 2 weeks to lose the dog. That is not going to happen.Where will this all lead.

  • I'm not certain (and I'm sure someone will come along soon who is) but I'm pretty sure they can't enforce a no pets clause in your contract.

Why not try having a word with them regarding the situation. Perhaps you can offer to put down some more of a deposit to cover any damage the dog might cause while you are in the house?

If you can't agree with them, and don't lose the dog, they will probably serve you notice and ask you to leave but you will have a couple of months to find somewhere new (with nicer agents!)

    Good luck :)

Jeez. You want to have your cake and eat it too. You signed an agreement that stated no pets. You now have a dog in someone elses property when you agreed to have no pets.

This is what'll happen: you are going to be kicked out. Rightly so.

    Start packing.

TBH you can't blame the agents. You agreed to no pets and now you have a dog. The sensible thing wold have been to discuss this with them rather than them finding out. Makes them believe you are untrustworthy (rightly or wrongly)!

So you're breaking a covenant of the lease too? You couldn't make it up.

Apologise profusely to the agents, and then explain the tragic and unforeseen situation with your Gran. Offer to have the house professionally cleaned at your expense when you leave.

Give them the opportunity to discuss it with the property owner. If I were a landlord, I'd be inclined to make an exception for a genuine case like this so long as the tenant were to do the right thing and remove any dog smell or hair from the house before leaving.

But I'd start looking for another place that accepts pets if I were you....

    Ah, that's different.

Start looking for a new place to live.

I've reported your last post, evoke. There is no need. Sun's shining, do you need some air perhaps?

OP, they will have to follow formal process and serve you with a Section 21 which gives you at least 2 months notice. If the terms of the lease between your landlord and the freeholder state that there are no pets then it simply isn't worth them keeping you there for the hassle they are going to get. It's pretty unlikely it'll ever happen but they could end up forfeiting their own lease and they simply won't be interested in the legal fees to fight the clause.

You'll either have to consider re-homing the poor dog :( or the two of you together ;)
