Xmas present: Camcorder or LCD TV? Which to get now, which to wait for?

As per title. I'm after a camcorder or LCD TV for my christmas present this year, and am a little uncertain of which one to go for, both I would like, but neither I am in desperate need for.

The Camcorders I am look at are the Sony HD range. Something like the Sony DCRSR30 with a 30GB HD and 2.5" touch screen would do nicely.

In terms of the TVs, I'm pretty stuck between the Panasonic TX23LXD60 (pricey!) or the JVC LT20DA6

Ideally I'd like something that will give me a few years good use, I don't exactly want to buy something that will be replaced in a few months by brand new technology. So which choice would seem to have the best lifespan at the moment?

  • IMHO, and only speaking personally of course ...

I'd wait a while before getting an LCD TV, at least until HD ones with built-in Freeview become the norm', and reduce in price.

If you're willing to spend that amount of cash on a telly, then I can recommend Sony's HDR-HC3E high-def camcorder. AMAZING build and picture quality, and good for stills too (though not whilst in video mode, I must say).

As I said, only my opinion.
  • I would wait before buying an LCD TV - soon they will be making "full HD" for a reasonable price so it is worth waiting. No point in buying one now and then realising it is not up to the job of 1080p.

Yes and by that time you'll have to get yourself a HD receiver to watch HD broadcast when low definition freeview becomes old fashion... Like anything with technology, anything you buy will become old after 6 months and if you want to wait then you'll have to wait forever as nothing will ever be the norm.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

Accepted that you can never wait for technology to "stop", but don't you believe that LCD TVs are generally overly-expensive, particularly when very few have great picture quality? Why should prices be excessive to obtain merely an expected, rather than fantastic quality?
