perhaps rescues are reluctant to rehome to households with young children in case the children could be at risk, rather than the dog
in which case they are surely to be applauded - if only every parent was as cautious at bringing their children into the reach of a dog with an unknown history
I get where you're coming from but ......
you should never, ever leave a dog alone with a child anyway so this shouldn't really be an issue.Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I wouldn't pay any money to any breeder who didn't health test, know their breed inside out, give lifetime backup, etc, etc (and on, and on, zzzzzzzzz - I have a long list of requirements from my breeder
). If they do all the things I ask for, and I am happy with them and their dogs, then i'll pay whatever it takes. Since it takes me about a year to save up that kind of money, I have plenty of time to decide whether a breeder I'm considering is 'good enough' for me (and vice versa
)
I feel the same way as you. The oldest dog I have just now I only had to wait 6 months for but my boy I waited 2 years for. I went to shows to find out the look and temprament of dogs I liked, checked out relevant health testing results, watched how the lines matured and evenutally after 2 years the time was right for me to have one of that breeders dogs.
I am generally very impatient and if I want something I want it NOW but with dogs it is an investment and paying more upfront reduces the liklihood of crippling ongoing costs throughout the dogs life.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

Hence me wanting a younger dog and discounting any adult dogs listed on various free sites as "gr8 wiv kids.. only selling as moving to a flat." Seriously, everyone who rehomes a dog seems to be moving to a flat!
Our dog is a shih tzu, 12 years old and barely moves from the sofa all day. She is still never, ever left alone with ds. Neither are the cats to be fair. The chickens are, but they're less vicious.
Thank you so much to everyone who has offered such helpful advise as to where I can look next. It may take me a couple of years to find the perfect dog, but I'll get there.0 -
I'll be delighted to hand over £750/£1000 for a puppy who I know won't have to go through painful surgery or spend hours with trainers to discourage him from attacking other dogs. As much as I love them both, I'd never get a cheap puppy or a rescue dog again, I just can't afford to.
So sorry about Dyson.
I have just paid £650 for a labrador puppy, having always had rescue mongrels.
I wanted to be as sure as I could be of the dog's temperament around children, to have it from the very start and know it's experiences from the start, and also as trudiha says, to reduce the chances of a tragedy such as hers.
Having seen what the breeder has done with the puppies from the day they are born, I would say there isn't a big profit margin, there is a hell of a lot of work if it is done properly.
I feel like I have got my money's worth, if one can talk about the gorgeous creature asleep on my feet in those terms! Please do not confuse me with other gratefulsforhelp. x0 -
Where I live stray dogs are taken to a kennel and can be rehomed by ANYONE for £30. So, if you are willing to take a risk on a stray (and you have £30) you can have a dog from the kennels near me. Facebook Middlesbrough Council Dog Warden Service0

To be fair, site like Preloved don't just sell 'bad' or unreliable dogs - I got my EBT and American Bulldog from Preloved and they are lovely dogs and get on well.
The more one gets to know of men, the more one values dogs.0
