Help please: Transferring photos from Desktop to Laptop and keeping date information

I've recently got a new laptop and am trying to copy my photos from my old desktop. Using a memory stick I was able to copy them but all the photos on the laptop now have the date information as the date I copied them over. The photos are of our daughter and we would like to keep the original data from the photos telling us which date they were taken on. Could someone advise a way of doing this please? Thanks very much.

If you are just copying the files, you shouldn't need to do anything. The file date attributes will change to reflect when the copy was created, but the EXIF information embedded within the file should not.

Simply right-click a file, choose Properties, Summary and you'll see the EXIF data within the file.

Note though that some photo editing tools such as Photoshop will modify this data if you edit the picture.

the modified date shouldn't change, click view, date modified in explorer

to preserve the date forever, and also make a backup copy, burn them to dvd

Thanks very much for your replies, it's much appreciated. I deleted the first lot of photos I copied over as I thought it didn't have the date info so I will copy again and hopefully will have more success. I'm also looking at the links provided. Thank you all. :j

If you copy pictures, then the file indicates the date they were created to the new location, not the date of the pictures.
It's the date of the file, not of the contents.
