    I am at a loss as to why she thought understating her pay was going to help her get a job.

    Presumably faced the "over qualified"/"won't want a drop in salary" views often held by employers who think the only motivation has to be money and that someone who is more able won't stay even when that person actually wants to downshift and would bring better experience to the organisation than someone who is not earning so much or doesn't have a masters or whatever.

    By the way, I'm not saying the OP should have under-stated the salary. It wouldn't have been necessary on a CV but if they completed an application form or were required to state it in a covering letter, the best thing is to say that it can be discussed at interview.
