Strange tax codes

My partner runs his own Ltd company that he has worked for one off for the last couple of years as outlined

Sept 2008 - Jan 2009 - employed at Company A ( made redundant)
April 2009-Dec2009 - contracted through own ltd company
Jan10 - July 10 - employed at Company B
August 10 - now - Own ltd company

He has just received 2 letter about his tax coding as follows
Company A taxcode 23L (even though he was made redundant 2 years ago)
Own Ltd company 724T

I could understand if he got a tax letter that refered to Company B but not A! that was 2 years ago

I am also concerned that it might be something that we have missed sending HMRC some paperwork or something to say he is back working at his Ltd company (in theory he hasn't ever left just gets paid when he is working through it)

Does he just need to call HMRC and tell them and it will get corrected? (sounds too simple!)

Thanks

It's well known that they've made a few mistakes lately, so yes, I would ring HMRC. Does he have his P45 from when he left company A?

Might do i will have to check, i know with being made redundant that it was difficult to get them to sort everything.

If he has will it probably just be a case of telling them and possibly sending copies?

i am worried about being find for not doing something that the Ltd company should!

I can't see that he will be fined: if I understand you correctly, HMRC don't seem to know that he's finished with the job from which he was made redundant.

As an example, DS2 had two letters from HMRC this year: one saying "You're not working for X any more so your tax code for that job will be ..." and another saying "Your tax code at Y job will be ..."

Now, it's true he's not working at X any more, but surely that means all his tax code should go to Y job? It's not important because actually he's not working for Y either, and he's a student who isn't likely to earn enough to pay tax anyway, but it doesn't exactly inspire confidence!
