Virgin trains new credit card

in Credit cards
Going to London tomorrow (hopefully) booked via Virgin Trains on an e-ticket, I have printed off the ticket but in the Terms and Conditions you have to produce the credit card that you booked it by. The problem is the original credit card expired in February 2011 so I have cut up as per the instruction from the bank as it is no longer valid and Nationwide sent me a new Debit Card to replace it. They have however sent a new card with a NEW number on it. I am now very upset that the conductor might reject this (it is my birthday tomorrow and I am major stressing over this!) I have a copy of my bank statement with the charge on it. There is not much more I can do! Although it is not my case, what would happen if you got your card stolen or the strip doesn't work so it had to be replaced, THROUGH NO FAULT OF YOUR OWN, would you still be asked to repay when you have already paid). Please, please can someone give me some advice.....

In this situation they may well reissue the card with the same number. I don't really understand how Nationwide have sent you a debit card to replace a credit card but if they really have done so then there was never any chance of getting the same card number as debit and credit cards will always have different number ranges. Why didn't you just keep the old card until you travelled, it was no longer valid for use as it was expired? Hopefully coolesticeking's advice will be correct and your journey will go without a hitch.0 -
It's Virgin Trains T&Cs that are the anomaly here. It sounds like they don't actually enforce them. If they did, the victims would have an extremely strong case against them for refusing to honour legitimately purchased tickets. There are many reasons why a passenger may not possess the card used for the purchase, it's simply not a reasonable condition to impose.0

If you have already collected the tocket theer is unlikely to be a problem, not least because the train manager has no knowledge of what card you purchased the ticket with. The big problem can arise when the card changes between the ticket being ordered and being collected. Virgin (and indeed most if not all train companies) ticket machines are quite likely not to issue the ticket in such circumstances, as you are required to insert the card into the machine. This is even more likely if the card number has changed. I am guessing that this was introduced to stop people using stolen credit cards to order tickets which they can collect later.0

I asked BA about this. They said if you forget your card, or the number has changed, they'll call the CC provider to confirm it.0

When I order train tickets at work, through the trainline, to collect at the station, it says you have to insert the card you paid with into the machine, however it actually dispenses the tickets whatever card you insert - I usually use my tesco clubcard, which isn't even a credit or debit card!0
