Network Drive

I'm thinking of adding an external HDD to our home network. I want to be able to put all my music and photos on there and access them from any PC in the house. This currently consists on 2 laptops (including one mac) and 3 PCs. I'd also like to be able to back the computers up easily. I'm guessing judging by the amount of stuff I have on mine and the amount of photos my brothers sending us from his gap year travels, the minimum space required would be 1TB. Currently only 1 PC is attached to the router. It's a standard SKY one and has a couple of spare ethernet ports on the back.
Is it easy to set this up? Can anyone recommend any drives that would be suitable? I'm usually reasonable good once I get my head round the PC stuff so it doesn't necessarily need to be fool proof to set up, but I would like it so it's easy to access once it's all up and running. I'm thinking of my Dad here who panics at the slightest change.
Thanks for any advice.

if one of those PCs is always on then you can use any old external drive
share it over the network and job done
I have 6 externals shared on the network from the main PC that is on 24/70 -
If you put all your eggs in one basket, and it fails, you'll lose them!!
