Virus Headaches & Backup Options

OK, I'm getting a headache, wish I was a whizz at computer things, but I'm not.

I have AVG installed, have read so many threads on this forum that my eyes are going funny, I know most of you hate it, so I have downloaded Avira. Did a scan and it said all OK. Just got a little pop up five mins ago saying it has found malware. Now what? I can't see any button on the over view screen to get rid of it. Do I just leave it there?

I can't do anything really major at the moment that might cause me to lose everything off my computer as I'm still in the process of trying to back everything up, and as I don't know what I'm doing anyway I don't wanna go fiddling with things only to lose the lot.

As Avira has found this does that mean its put it in a vault and that the malware and whatever else cannot harm my computer anymore and is OK to stay there?

Am I OK with just this checker or do I need something else as well? I have read about CCleaner and malware things but don't understand what I need or don't and how much space its going to take up on my laptop, as I'm not doing well with space as it is.

Which leads me to my next point.....

On my:

OS (C:) Drive this is what I have: 34.6GB free of 136GB

Recovery (D:) 5.25GB free of 9.99GB

Is this good or bad?

I have a dell inspiron on windows vista.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My other laptop is a Toshiba Satellite and this is what that one says on the above:
OS (C:) 4.86GB free of 74.3GB
Data (E:) 67.9GB free of 73.2GB
Hows this? Though as the top bar is in red I guess not good.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am trying to get all my pictures onto a facebook account and maybe save them to disc as well, and am setting up a desktop just for pictures. I have got rid of videos off the laptops but space is a really big problem.

Would getting a External hard drive give me any more huge space? Are they worth it and what is a really good cheapish one?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also, my hinge is totally broken on the dell can't close it and its going to fall apart soon, we pay for cover each month but if we phone the guys to fix it will they to take it away? I use it for work and need this one.
Also I know that if you break your laptop that you can get another one with the cover we have, but can you get an upgrade any way? I'm too scared to try and break it - even though this one is years old and well on its way out, freezes all the time, stalls, won't play, slow as hell i could go on......... We got it from PC World, and the man who sold it us said that a lot of people have 'accidents' and get a new one, but would they upgrade it anyway?
Thanks for reading and any help you can give my aching head would be very gratefully received.
;) Thanks to TS, BM, LR and the others for great help with 'P+I' ;)
    It's a big mistake to have two Anti Virus programs working so if you are going to stick with Avira then make sure AVG is gone (preferably with the removal tool you can download).
    If you run a scan with Avira and it finds something bad then it goes to quarantine. You can view quarantine and there is a delete button to get rid of any files from there.
    Your anti Virus program will protect you from many things and in real time but it is worth also having Malwarebytes. Won't take up much room and if run periodically can give you extra re-assurance. It can nuke somethings that AV cannot
    To have less than 15% of a drive free is not great news. Depends what is going to C on your Toshiba hard drive but ensure that no documents, photos, videos or music is and if it is move it to the data drive.
    Getting an external hard drive is not expensive. I've got a 250gb Western Digital one and it is very easy to use. I use it for backing up files but if I want to use files then they are better on a drive in the machine I think.
