Scottish power would not talk to me, as I am no longer one of their customers.
As a buyer, I found then very helpful until they were stupid enough to try to dump me back on the standard rate, when there was a cheaper alternative that some how missed the search engines.

So now down to 21p per KW return, which is still a great rate based on a 3K System for £7,200ish or 4K for £8,000

Still a lot of profit (and elecy) to be made if you're not moving for 25 years!

Panels still getting cheaper almost by the minute.

My friendly local installer had a quote for 190w SG Solar panels at 90 pence per watt, or £171 per panel, inc. delivery (plus the 5% VAT). As they were £1 a watt even three to four weeks ago, that's now potentially another £400 or so off a 4kWp system.

Keep those fingers crossed, how's about $0.40 per watt?

    Indeed - it's great progress.
I'm now enjoying my electrically powered flying car, powered by 'too cheap to meter' power.

Alas - press releases are easy.
Actually shipping product in volume cheaply at a profit has proved hard for many who have made great announcements.

I note - for example - NanoSolar - http://www.nanosolar.com/ - have news on their website about new $20m funding, and over the last year, seem to have listed about 10MW of installed sites over the last year - whereas they announced a gigawatt of planned capacity at new facilities per annum in 2008.

Will be interesting - the limit of cost for simple silicon cells can't be far off - it needs something disruptive.
Be it a way to use less silicon, or some cheap way to do mulitlayer cells to get much cheaper.
  • Hey I'm new. Hi

Looking at 6K according to a few quotes now for a 3kW system on the 21p FIT rate. SolarEssence quoted 6.2K with their cheaper brand panels and REC have just quoted 6K.

How does this sound to you guys ?

Hello there. A few people have mentioned prices for 4kWp systems of about £7k or just under. Assuming the panel cost element is now less than £1k / 1kWp then £6k sounds proportionately similar.

Not sure if that makes any sense, sorry. Basically, if £7k or less is good for 4kWp, the £6k must be close to the bottom for 3kWp. I think! If not, then it's certainly well into the 'reasonable' bracket.

Thanks Mart for the reply. I just had another quote for a 4kWp system - the first surveyor to suggest that's possible with my roof. He quoted 8k which seems a little high - although they were a local company and filled me with a bit more confidence than the cheaper quoters. Maybe be I can get that cost down to 7k!:money:

I got a quote for 12 SunTech panels giving 3Kwp for £6600 which I felt was reasonable.

We've been quoted from £6800 to £7500 for 16 panels - ranging from 3.7kwp to 4kwp in price order. If you reckon on around £200 per panel and maybe a bit for a cheaper inverter on a lower price, £6k for a budget brand system is probably about the mark. You'll almost certainly pay a bit more for bigger name panels.

Just to come back to the thread I started! Our local monthly magazine, has an article on Solar PV panels this month. Now, I don't know the credentials of the author. She makes an admittedly very general statement, I quote. "The current cost for a typical solar system is aound £11000, and the estimated earnings over a 25 year period are around £13750, making a total gain of almost £3000."
I must admit that on reading this I thought that the figure would not be sufficient for me to outlay the capital. I do appreciate that people might also want to invest in this for green reasons. I have posted the info to see if it does gell with what current potential investors are being told?

David - that price is way out of date - 4kwp systems should be obtainable below £8k, and in our area quoted returns are around £750 per year giving a conservative 25 year income of £18750 meaning at least a total gain of £10k. In my specific case a 4kwp system is coming in at £7500, with income from FIT and export of £750 plus some cost savings on top so my total gain could be around the £15k mark depending on the degradation of the panels.
