Just out of interest what do you put the 5W 40 in the microlite or the Clio.
If it's the clio I'd be tempted to say that oil is too thin for it when it's cold, meaning it will burn it until it get's warm. When you change the oil try upping it to a 10W40 or even 15W40 to see if it makes any difference.
I put some 5W30 i had left over from my old car, when I did an oil change on my present but older car I decided to use it up but it started using oil, so i changed it for 10w40 and it went back to using nothing.
Just a thought!!
I put 5W 40 in the clio, I looked in the hand book and it recommended a range so went to Halfords and looked in their guide which recommended 5 w40. Then went to local car spares shop and bought it cheaper. In hindsight I should have just asked the spares shop. I also thought a thinner oil might help with the diesel noise on cold startup.
The microlight takes shell vsx4 a motorbike oil as the engine and gearbox has common lubrication to save weight I guess. Gonna have to sell my share in it soon due to time and money constraints (young family).0 -
I'd say deffo try a thicker oil, it sound too thin to me, my cars handbook says i can use down to 0W/30 but i know for sure it'll leave a good blue haze behind me at that!!
The diesely noise will probably be the tappets which will quieten down as the engine warms through. When I serviced my Cousins Clio I put Halfords own 10W40 semi synthetic in and it ran very sweetly, quietly and didn't use a drop in the year until i next serviced it.
Hope you sort it whatever you decide to do!!0 -
I have a 2002 1.2 8V clio. My Aunt had it previously from new so I know the full history of the car. It has only done 30k, and 19k when I got it 10 months ago.
When I got the car the oil was very low so I topped it up since then it has been using about a 0.5L per 1000 miles. is this acceptable?
Well within acceptable limits. Its even within some manufacturers limits.0 -
0.5 litre on a 1000 miles is OK, my car does the same.
Emulsified oil on the filler cap is not a problem can be attributed to cold weather. wipe it off and watch it disappear through the summer.
Next oil change, flush with flushing oil...... I don't do those oil additives, keep the used flushing oil in a clearly labelled transparent container you can use it another 2 times at least, I throw mine away after three times. I also buy flushing oil in a 5 litre container, use 2.5 litres each time - get 6 flushes out of each can. Obviously when you pour in dirty flushing oil you leave a bit in the bottle otherwise the particles and bits at the bottom will go in so you actually only use 2.3 litres on flushes 2, 3, 5, & 6.0 -
using oil flush can have its problems it can remove any build up thats stopping any leaks and put the kaibush on any worn oil seals. in this case you have no other option, plus if changing to a different grade you wanna make sure that not left in there.
cleaning out the breather pipes i use a babies bottle brush with a rag on the end and push through a few times, clean out the oil breather gauze with a bit of engine flush and let dry before putting back in.0
