I recently bought some tinned vegetables for my elderly father who is unfortunately in poor health.
He has a carer who helps him with most of his meals. When she opened the tin, there was a small piece of plastic, about the size of a 1p piece inside.
She of course removed it, but my father would have probably just eaten it if this had not been done.
I have never had this problem before, so didn't really know what to do. I decided to keep the article and write to the company concerned.
I received, what is obviously a standard reply to the effect... "We are very sorry, here is £5"
Should i just accept this and move on .. ?
or should there be more I can do. After all, the size of the article could easily have been a severe choking hazzard.
Many thanks for any input

I think, sadly, that something tragic has to happen before you can claim a decent level of compensation. What you should of course do is force your elderly father to eat the piece of plastic, then after he chokes you can write another letter and get muchos $$$$$ in compensation.
You can't unfortunately go around claiming for 'what ifs' - down that route madness lies. What if your father ate it and didn't choke, but it turned out he was allergic to plastic and his head swelled up and burst flinging him out of the window onto the road where a passing bus ferrying elderly nuns taking toys (made by african refugee amputees) to the childrens hospital swerved out of control and crashed into the orphanage for terminally cute kittens?
What if, what if, what if, Dear Asda, please see the above scenario, I think we can all agree its all down to the piece of plastic in the tin, I would like £1,000,000 in compensation please.0 -
What exactly do you want to happen?0

Bring it to the attention of the food standards agency http://www.food.gov.uk/
It might have been a one-off or it might be a production line failure, meaning more of them could be out there. FSA will be a starting point.0 -
When I lived in Southampton, years ago, there was a story in the local evening paper about a shop being prosecuted for selling a bag of frozen French beans with a dead mouse in it.
They were charged with selling food "containing a foreign body" :rotfl::rotfl: Honest !0
