Broken ipod touch ?

Hi I hope someone can help. My son's ipod touch wont switch on, it was ok one day and dead the next. I have tried all the things on the Apple site like keeping it charged (nothing) holding this and that button (nothing) so I guess it's just broken and out of warranty. Does anyone know of anything else I could try ? or where I could take it to get it fixed at a reasonable cost. We have an Apple shop in the town but only a small one and they don't have the tech people there I don't think like the larger stores.

I don't know how much it would cost for them to have a look at it, has anyone ever done this ?

Thanks in advance.

If you take it back to Apple thay can offer you a refurb for about half the price of a new one, however depending on how old it is you could argue it should last more than a year or two.
