HELP PLEASE - ASOS wont replace item

Hi everyone, this is my 1st post so i apologise if it is in the wrong place. (and long winded)
i ordered a hoody from ASOS for my husbands xmas present, i managed to get the one he wanted in the sale and had a code and managed to get it for £57 instead of usual price £89.99 so i was well pleased and within our xmas budget.
anyway the cord that goes round the hood part came out in the 2nd wash ( i washed in on 30 deg refresh), i thought about fixing it but the holes it threads through were frayed etc so thought i best just leave it and send it back as must be faulty.
i contacted them and sent it back asking for a replacement. they emailed me saying i had been refunded as the item was no longer in stock - fair enough - i looked on there for a different top and saw the same top in the right size and colour so i emailed asking fir the replacement
they replied with sorry we cant replace as we have already refunded
i said i didnt want a refund i wanted the hoody
they said it wasnt in stock
i said it was and sent them the link (it had changed name but is same top - wont let me post links as a newbie)
one is callled paul smith zebra hoody and the other is called paul smith zip through hoody, the top is exactly the same though
then they go back to we cant give you top as we have refunded
oh they said i can buy the hoody again FULL PRICE and they will give me free delivery........ its £33 more!
so im confused, can they refuse to give me the top even though it is there for all to see and they sent me faulty item and then refunded insead of replacing... i suspect i woul have been given replacement if the price had come down...
i am just looking for some advice as all i seem to find is people wanting refunds when i want a replacement, i just think it seems wrong as if i was in a shop holding the replacement asling to swap they wouldnt say no would they? grrr
i will be so grateful for any advice! sorry about my clumsy 1st post!

Sorry, but they are completely entitled to issue a refund. One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0
