A friend is wanting to swap from Talk Talk to Orange for phone and broadband, but Talk Talk have told her that they have her phone number its not with BT and said if she leaves she will have to cancel her contract and lose phone number. She will also lose phoneline and internet till someone picks it back up.

Are they telling her the truth and if they are are there any ways to get out of it withnout losing phone number and internet connection during cross over??

It sounds like the line is LLU'd by Talk Talk (on their own equipment at the exchange).

Others have reported difficulty in changing providers in such circumstances and some have found that the only way they can do so is to return to BT on a 'return to donor' basis (that should be free of charge but will involve a new 12 month contract with BT).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

TT to Orange, what a bad idea.
Do a return to donor for BT line rental as Heinz advises, then once that is done you can chose whichever ISP you prefer.
So some broadband downtime will be unavoidable.

I would say there is more options than returning to BT to get out , however others will charge a connection fee , where as BT wont , !!!

Bethere phone + BB £86 connection charge ( use quidco for £40 cashback)

Post office Phone + BB £130 connection charge

these are the the 2 I have looked at , and Bethere with the Quidco £40 cb is looking inviting for me !!

Even with the Bethere connection charge , its still on par cost wise than with talktalk
