How would you deal with school

  • Hi
I'm a Y10 students, and I totally know what its like to be misinformed about exams. My form tutor lost my exam timetable and similarly because the current science teacher was away due to sickness, many of my class members weren't notified. Cue me and several friends sitting a science exam (Official GCSE) which we were thought was a mock! Tbh, this was partly my fault as I think at the very least I may have recieved some form of notice, which I didn't bother to listen to. I'm not saying your daughter hasn't listened to this, but schools that don't inform students well enough, it can be easily missed.
Luckily, I sat my english exam at the very start of y10 and got an A! which can also be improved! so I'm hoping for an A* overall. I also got 3 A's in my science GCSE and I have the option of retakes too!
Hope everything goes well for your daughter!

Weren't some people making noises about children taking early GCSEs and then being give the chance to improve their grade?

This doesn't apply to your dd, OP, as her performance was affected by issues outside her control.

For most pupils though, what is the point of condensing 2 years into one and then allowing someone to resit just because they are unhappy with their grades?

It makes no sense and artificially raises the overall grades IMO.

At the very least, the retake should make the first result void, so they could end up with a worse grade. That's more realistic, I think.
  • the whole way years 10/11 sit exams seem bonkers at the mo. dd is in year 10 and had to sit some science exams earlier this term and was told they would count towards their overall gcse results. the majority of her class got marks at least 2 grades lower than predicted  probably as they all agreed they had not covered most of the topics at all. when the teacher was questioned she said not to worry they can all resit later in the year and different schools covered the topics in different order. so we all have to pay for resits for exams that our kids had no hope in getting a reasonable result (don't even get me started on sub teachers  sorry to any sub teachers reading)

Do you have to pay for re-sits? Is this a state school or a private one? Or do you mean as a generalisation that the taxpayer pays for it?

Having left school in the early 80s I'd never heard of taking an exam early and then taking it again to see if you could improve the grade till a couple of years ago when neice was that age.

Junior has just had the results of his A level module that he sat in January - needless to say he will have to resit it in May / June.

Apparently it's going to cost £13 to resit.

But I agree its a totally mad situation where students can resit exams until they get the grade they need

IF DD decides to resit any of her exams it's £30 each time

And twins high school start their GSCE's in yr 9 so in effect they get 3 yrs to complete their exams!!! But we've not been asked to pay for any resits!!!

Thats the difference between a grammar school, and the local comp I guess

science exams are modular so they get examined on the modules they have covered

from next year you will only be able to resit an exam once and the resit grade will superceed the orginal, so you could well end up with a lower score that you started with. At least this is the case for G.C.S.E science but I believe all G.C.S.E's will be the same.

yep i have had to pay for resits. this is your bog standard high school.

suesmith... she is taking all 3 science gcse's and in 2 of the 3 exams almost all of her class were marked far lower than expected and are all sure they hadn't covered the subjects in the exam. a couple of other classes in her year got almost the results they were predicted... which seems to point to her class not covering the same topics.

    Yes you are right.
