Well, am I the only one in the room that when told there is no reason to panic, starts to worry just a little bit. After all, that was what they said in chernobyl, before lehmen brothers went bankrupt, and just after the oil spill in the US...

No, you are not the only one. Don't panic, Mr Mainwaring! :)

The main trouble with pumping water into a light water reactor is that the water acts as a moderator, which tends to restart the nuclear reaction. Apparently, they are adding boron to the water to counteract this. I wonder where they keep the boron handy for such occasions?

New Scientist has this about the nuclear power stations and associated blasts and problems:

    http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2011/03/massive-explosion-rips-through.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=online-news

    Very interesting. Very level headed.

    One point they made:
"Up to 160 people may have been exposed to radiation, and those arriving at evacuation centres are being scanned and given iodine supplements. Iodine is used to mitigate radiation sickness. "

The iodine supplements stop the uptake of radioactive Iodine-131 in the thyroid, simply by filling the thyroid up with so much non-radioactive Iodine that there's no space for the nasty stuff. It's very effective provided it's taken before exposure to the Iodine-131.

I've just been watching NHK (Japanese TV with an English translation on Sky 516) and the devastation is extraordinary. Looking at the scale on a map, the tsunami hit an area at least equivalent to the coastline between Bournemouth and Hastings and possibly a lot longer than that, though hopefully less densely populated.

Japan is one of the most densely populated countries in the World

Agreed, but thank goodness this is one of the least populated areas of Japan whereas the length of coastline that I used as an example is one of our most densely populated and that's why I used it as an example, along with the fact that the south coast is cited to be the most likely to be hit by a Tsunami (if La Palma goes).

I don't know how many people lived in this area, but given that there were 1m in Sendai alone, I would imagine it would be in the low millions. There are about 310k people in shelters and already looks like a sad inevitability that there will be 10s of thousands who died. I just hope it isn't hundreds of thousands.

Miyagi Prefecture has 1.4% of the Japanse population (speaking from memory), so several million in total, but surely most will be inland or up a hill, etc? It's very sad, though.

Most will live by the coast. Think about the original industry. Fishing.

By the way, they dont know how much water is in or not in the reactor 3.

Listening to the news, both NHK and Sky have said tsunami warning was sounded within about 1 minute of the quake and a further announcement (don't know how much later) said to leave now the wave would arrive in 6 minutes.

I'm hoping that a lot of people will have got out due to the excellent warning system. Looking on the positive side, at the very least a lot of lives will have been saved because of it.
