For your first car, surely the main consideration these days, before brand, reliability, purchase price etc will be the insurance costs as thats more than likely what will cost you the most.

Have a look at a few of the cars listed above and then get insurance quotes for them - narrow down the field to what you can actually afford to run, not just buy. £1000 on a car is fine, you'll find something half decent for that money whatever make and model you go for, but I pretty much guarantee that the insurance on a new driver, male or female will be fairly astronomical, so you need to narrow down which cars you can actually afford to insure - and if this means going for something dull and boxy and slow then so be it.

Golfs are pretty expensive as i have been looking for one, and the insurance would work out mega expensive =(

Yes I agree, but I was just trying to think of the two extremes and the Golf was the first that came to mind.

Also just because a car is that bit larger doesn't mean that the insurance is necessarily higher on a first car -- you'd be surprised sometimes. My first car (a while back I know) was a 1.6 Cavalier (big old bus) and insurance for that was similar to a 1.4 Fiesta.
