Dell credit searched for me what?

So I bought a laptop from dell couple of days back. Paid for it in full using my credit card.

And today I received an email from Equifax about a change to my credit report. I loged in and found this:

DELL S.R.O-192BUSINESS , a Third party company, has made an inquiry against your credit report on 09/03/2011 . If you were not aware of or did not consent to this search, contact DELL S.R.O-192BUSINESS or Equifax for clarification.

I don't know if this is a soft search or full one but why would they search me. And surely one needs to give his or her consent before company can record a credit search against you? Is this common?

Cheers
