is there a time limit for being laid off?

I got laid off form work in the last week of november, at the time i was informed it was because of how much snow we had. Perfectly understandable, as i was in the groundworks business, and you can't see what you doing on the ground in 2 feet of snow. As we had a bad winter, i hadn't been back to work by christmas, then after christmas, my mate who works for the same company told me he was back to work. So i contacted my employer to ask when i'd be back. he said that at the time, it was looking like the start of february as he didnt have a lot of work on. He'd send my P45 out incase i wanted to look for other work, but would give me a ring when work picked back up again. I stil havent heard from him yet.
Now i've been told by a couple of people, that by law, he can only lay me off for 12 weeks, and then has to give me full redundancy of what i'm owed, or, take me back on to work again.
I've had a bit spy about on the citizens advice site, and although there is plenty info on redundancy etc, i can't find anything which states a time limit of how long i can be laid off.

Start there and google any terms you don't understand
You also need your contract and undrstand how you are employed.
This should help with the basics, if you need more help just ask some things are not obvious from first read.0
