....it's about transferring money to *anyone* without any written confirmation/contract etc. ......
Paying a deposit is normal enough, but doing so with no contract in place is a major concern and not something I would recommend doing.

the plumber who installed my combi, asked for nothing until the job was complete.
    no deposit or anything.

if he wants 40% for the materials, then go and buy the boiler yourself.

What if he agrees labour only, comes to fit it and the boiler is wrong type / spec?
Who pays for the days wated labour

Many traders prefer to either buy the materials or get the customer to buy from the wholsaler direct (with a list and a person to ask for in branch that has been told to supply decent kit only and not cheap tat that takes twice as long to fit)

I do take credit cards, but pass on the bank surcharge of 2.8% (not on debit cards).
The client has the option of paying by credit card (at a cost) or debit card (at no cost to them)
    baldly going on...
