Faulty Boots - Refusal of refund

Hi All

I check out this site, CAB and many-a-savvy-money-site, so I felt I was by no means niave when it came to money! However, I was surprised and annoyed that I was fobbed off so easily by this myth: sale items are non-refundable?

Basically, I bought a pair of boots in the New Look sale. They looked wicked. But when I put them on a week later, the zip teeth splayed open from the bottom - meaning they were irreperable and faulty within minutes of me using them for their purpose.

Unfortunately, I could not find the receipt (herein lies the problem I suspect!). So i thought if i went in with a bank statement with the transaction on it - problem solved!

Na-da! Because I bought two items, I was unable to "convince" the New Look manager that those boots were indeed purchased at her store! She opted to give me a credit note. Also she said that sale items were non-refundable anyway....

Is this fair practice? If so, I'm taking much better care of my receipts off sale items! I also noted that when i finally gave up arguing and accepted the credit note, that the reason for return on it stated "Not wanted". I thought...uh nah... what??

Can anyone with any experience of this let me know whether i did the right thing in accepting their excuses for giving me the credit note? Are bank statements useless on refunds when i've made a multiple purchase? Are sale items non-refundable, even when faulty??

:D

Their company policy is over ridden by Consumer Law, they were not of merchantable quality so you were entitled to a refund, but not being able to produce the receipt, well your stuck missus. Mind you, saying that, if you could have taken the other thing you bought back with the boots and the balance was the same, that might have been different, I honestly dont know.

Glad they offered you a credit note though, wait for another half price sale and get twice the value
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

'Sale items are non-refundable' means that if you change your mind you cannot take the thing back and get a refund.
However, if the product is faulty, they must provide a remedy.

A bank statement should be sufficient proof of purchase in this instance.

Absolutely, and in this case they did.
One important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.

If boots were faulty, you should be given a refund regardless of the store's policy. If you provide a receipt/bank/credit card statement this should suffice as proof of purchase
