Does hearing about other people's expenditure ever get you down?

Wasting money is nothing to be proud of! I am cheap and proud! I earn a very decent salary but I pride myself in putting money away and finding a bargain. I would just feel sorry for her if I were you. As they say, money can't buy you happiness and you are certainly not going to buy it for £800 in Mr Ts!House saving Targets:

The funny thing is that really rich people are usually very careful with their money - drive round in old cars, and happily show off charity shop buys, because they are so rich they aren't insecure. In my line of work I deal with millionaires and people with very little, and in my experience it is only the people who are trying to pretend to be something they aren't who show off about their money. The rich don't need to.0

Hello,
I try to stick to £55 a week for food for 3 of us and find it really hard, £65 is easier. It's really hard to buy enough fruit - mainly apples and oranges. Apples being £1.99 a pack and we get through 7 apples a day with no trouble. I'd love to buy apples by the crate!!!
I would love to know how it is possible to spend just £80 a month / £19 a week! ColleenPamela - do you have any example meals you can share?
I plan all meals and some (when trying new ones and I'm cooking) are a disaster!
Even when I wasn't budgeting I wasn't spending £800 a month! That's crazy - imagine what you could do with the £500 ish overspend - that's £6,000 per year...........
What would YOU do with a spare £6k pa?
erinart, if you are anywhere near Morries this weekend, they have special offers on fruit and veg. I'm going to treat myself to some oranges, this weekend, They have packs of 4 oranges, and packs of 4 apples, priced at 30p per pack. Can't go far wrong with that. I'm going to push the boat out and spend £1.20, whilst i have it. :rotfl:
Well, sometimes you've just got to laugh.............Debt free - Is it a state of mind? a state of the Universe? or a state of the bank account?

If I was this lady I'd half that budget and still eat nicely (if she seriously isn't in debt) and pop the rest in the bank. There's a nice holiday paid for each year and a rainy day fund.
She doesn't sound like a very nice person and I wouldn't rise to the bait, be proud of what you are doing and think of the lessons your children are learningLBM: 22.12.2010 :j Self-managed DMP start 29.1.2011DMP Mutual Support Thread No: 4130 -
I would seriously consider distancing yourself from this nasty woman - how dare she tell your manager what you told her in confidence, and then complain about you! That would p*** me off a lot more than her comments over your shopping. As others have said, more fool her, £800 is a ridiculous amount to spend on food, it doesn't make you any less of a person for spending less, it makes you a better person, and very admirable (like a lot of other people on here) who have a big family to feed on a small food budget. Honestly, some people are so cruel, but you don't need people in your life like that, life is too short and also too difficult as it is without so called "friends" making you feel worse about yourself. And as the saying goes "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent", so don't let her. I know it is easier said than done, especially if you work with her, but try and take everything she says with a pinch of salt, until you find the new job, then you can wave goodbye.
Sorry, that turned into a bit of a rant - I just hate people thinking they are superior to others!
I used to be a bit of a snob, not to the point where I would judge others, but I just wouldn't shop in certain places - but fast forward a few years where I ended up with a debt of £19,000. That soon wiped the snobery out of me, and I realised I was much happier been unmaterialistic and not so shallow. Now I love getting a bargain, and these ways have seen me clear my debt, saved £10,000 to have an amazing two year trip around the world, and next step to buy a house on my own. So embrace your MSE ways, I know who I would rather be friends with!
Have a good weekend xx0 -

I can so relate to this bit - more fool the silly woman. I'd put a fiver on her having a LBM in the futureLBM: 22.12.2010 :j Self-managed DMP start 29.1.2011DMP Mutual Support Thread No: 4130 -
£800 a month!
Thats around £26 a day on an average month!
She could of course just be gloating and doesn't spend anywhere near that.
She could even be jealous that you manage to spend so little!Mortgage: [STRIKE]Jan 11 - £91830 [/STRIKE][STRIKE] Jan 12 - £89'199[/STRIKE] May 14 - £69'999 Car Loan: [STRIKE]Jan 11 - £3658 [/STRIKE] July 12 - £0! Credit Card: [STRIKE] Jan 11 - £3300 Jan 12 - £2250 [/STRIKE] Oct 13 - £0

If she wants to spend that amount on food thats up to her, but personally I think its very wasteful.
I had to say to a friend last night that I couldnt meet up with her for a drink. I just cant afford it. I dont think she really understood because she is in a very good position financially. I guess until you have walked in our shoes you dont know what its like.
When my friend says she is skint she is probably down to her last thousand pounds in the bank (and I dont mean that in a nasty way). I dont think she could really understand how anyone couldnt find £20-£30 to go for a drink but my circumstances are very different.0 -
It's easy to shop when your budget is the size of the debt of a small country.
It takes real skill when it's smaller than a midges w***y!!!0 -
If she's boasting about spending £800, I'd assume she's lying. Either that or she's a complete idiot who feeds her family on caviar and swans. I mean, who would honestly boast about being THAT bad with money?!
Tonight we're making enchiladas with some Mission wraps (25p in Co-Op as they had to be eaten today!) and Smart Price salsa. And I too feel pretty smug when I know that I can live high on the hog foodwise and spend no more than £70 a month between us.
Keep it up OP, it's shoppers like all of us that will be counting the spare money at the end of the month and not be up the creek without a paddle if ever our circumstances change!0
