when we are on holiday my DD has 5 children pack ups are essential as with 8 of us in total cafes are a bit of a luxury. We have two big food flasks which we fill with chunky veggie soups and two smaller ones that have coffee in for the 'grown ups' I bought I think it was in Lakeland a couple of years ago a lage bottle type container that has a small tap on it.down the middle inside is a removeable 'ice pack' which we put in the freezer overnight so when we make up the orange squash for the kids it fits back into the middle and keeps the squash cold .It has a carrying handle and the eldest boy (15) usually carrys it .Not too heavy as the kids are always wanting drinks and a 'fruit-shoot'type drink works out expensive .Or even just a 3 litre plastic bottle filled with squash and a couple of ice cubes help if you don't want too much expence. We also do 'finger food' boiled eggs ,scothch eggs ,sausage rolls, I also make a large long sausauge roll type pastrie that we can cut into slices. Those plastic 'chinese ' boxes filled with pasta salad are good and a handful of plastic spoons to eat it with. a box of cherry tomato's and lock 'n'lock boxes full of chopped celery or carrot sticks. My three youngest grandsons are 6,9,& 11 and my DD isn't keen on them eating crisps as it doesn't fill them up much.banans are full of energy producing stuff and are very portable

One of my favourite picnics ever was when a friend popped into Tesco and bought a hot, cooked chicken and a loaf of bread and we all ate it with our fingers on the beach.

I prefer to buy cartons of squash (do they still do the value ones?) as that way the bag gets lighter as the day goes on as you dispose of them :) In the car we've had a 2L bottle of fizzy drink and some paper cups for the journey but no way would I carry a big bottle around with me!
