You might be surprised how much regular road traffic there is - Royal Mail and most of the couriers (TNT, City Link etc) run overnight articulated trucks to move items between depots - they will generally be leaving at the same time every night. Given that from the map there is a dual carriageway very close to the railway, that might still be a possible. (Similarly the big supermarkets will be running overnight stocking trips, newspapers moving around etc etc)

Im 99% certain its not coming from the road system, you get used to the sounds of that and this is much different, louder and more 'clackety' (excuse my made up word! lol)
The road was built ten years ago, and mostly overnight so we are acutely aware of the different noises we get from there.

Im going down there one of these nights I swear hehe

In terms of Royal Mail, I always end up reciting Skimbleshanks The Railway Cat in my head when anyone mentions mail trains lol

Yep, that one usually ends up an ear worm too hehe
  • As Ive said, I know nothing of trains, but if it helps Caverswall signal box is a tiny little thing which is barely a mile away from the much bigger Blythe Bridge signal box.

I don't know the local area but the opening times are pulled straight from the 'Route Opening Hours' of Network Rails 'Rules Of The Route'.

Also, I don't think there is a signal box at Blythe Bridge.... the next one down the line in that direction is Uttoxeter.
