I came across it while reading a thread on here for laser eye surgery.
Its a contact lense that you wear at night that temporarily corrects your cornea so you have perfect vision the next day.
I had never heard of it before and am considering it.
Any experiences?

I do and I LOVE it! I sleep in my lenses, take them out in the morning and get 24-48 hours of clear vision. It so beats glasses that steam up and all the other hassles. You have to have a scan to see if your prescription is suitable, and it took me 3-4 months to get used to putting them in before bed, they felt uncomfortable at first while I was awake.
One of my friends has her own opticians so she suggested it, as I had mentioned laser, but she didnt think that was a good idea yet. Have to say I was very sceptical, but I would never go back to anything else now.
You need to have an eye scan every 6 months and I get new lenses then too. I pay approx £30 a month for everything including any eye drops/lense cleaners I need.
I dont think many opticians offer this as the equipment is hugely expensive to get at the outset. Hope that helps.0 -
Thank you Kelou. I had never heard of it before today and I think this could be the thing for me.
Did you wear normal contacts before this? I wondered whether the Ortho K ones feel different to 'normal' ones. Was it expensive initially? I mean with tests etc
I can't believe I had never heard of this!I have realised I will never play the Dane!

I have never heard of this, but wonder if you have considered Night and Day lenses? I had these for a number of years before having my eyes lazered a year ago. They were great, I'd put a new pair in on the 1st of each month then completely forget them until the next month. By the end I was paying about £15 a month for them (had gone down over time).0

I have these already Faithcecilia! I loved them to start with but my eyes don't seem to like them now and I seem to be wearing my glasses more and moreI have realised I will never play the Dane!

Hi skipie,
I have never worn lenses before getting these so I am not sure how they compare, they are hard lenses so I dont think they are as comfortable as the daily ones.
I think initially the only outset was the scan to see if I was suitable and from memory it was about £100 ish, but for me it was worth every penny. I have been using them for about 4 years now, but I did find the first few months really hard. I guess it didnt help that I had never worn lenses before, but I used to go to bed 30 mins early to allow me time to get them in right! Initially they felt quite uncomfortable but now I dont notice them at all. And also they are very strict on the scans every 6 months as I think it shows how well the lenses are doing their job.
definatley worth investigating, if like me you are still too nervous to be lasered!0 -
Also from what I understand, there are not many opticians who offer this, as the cost of the equipment and staff training makes it an expensive service to offer, I had never heard of it either but apparently Phillip Scholfield used them, not sure if he still does?!0

Thank you! I know when I started using contacts it took me quite a while to get the hang of it (and I still need a mirror now!) I will get an appt and let you know how I get on. Fingers crossed I can have these as I don't want to wear my glasses every day and I am definitely too scared still of the laser! xxI have realised I will never play the Dane!

Good luck, hope its works as well for you as it does for me!0

I used to work in an Opticians that offers this service..and once all the initial fitting and trials had been done, the contract price per month (for lenses, aftercare etc) was around £35.
I was only an optical assistant there, but found the ortho-k really imteresting, but this was 2006 when it was only just starting to take off so we only had about 10 patients using it!!
If you live in or around Leeds, let me know and I'll tell you the name of the opticians.
Good luck!0 -
I was tempted when I read this thread, as I hadn't heard of Ortho K beforehand, but when I googles to find out more, I read that some users find that their sight deteriorates over the course of the day on a really uneven way as the lens reverts to normal, such that they cannot wear glasses to correct it to a good enough standard to drive, and also that a lot of people suffer from starbursts at night lid after laser surgery. This has put me off. Has anyone posting on this thread who has tried OrthoK had any problems like this?0
