Advertising space

Hi
I would be really grateful if someone could help me please!:(
I signed a contract on behalf of my husband's business for advertising space in a publication. The rep who came to the house said that if we cancelled within 14 days then we wouldnt be charged. He spent all of 5 mins with me and was very rushed.
Within the 14 days we emailed the company and cancelled the contract. Now they are chasing me for a cancellation fee of 30% of the contract which is approx £214! It does say on the paper work that I signed that this would be the case if we cancelled but the rep told me differently.
My husband rang them and asked them what work they had done to warrant the £214 fee. The man at the company said that they had sent a rep round! Since when did you pay to have a rep visit you?!
Is anyone able to advise me where I might stand on this legally. I am not an authorised signator of the company as its all in his name.
Many thanks for any help you can offer.
