My kittens deserve asbos!

Hey,

Just looking for a bit of advice really! A few months ago my mum was out walking the dogs in a forest about 6:30am and 2 little crying skinny kittens came up to her! Obviously she didn't want to leave them there so she brought them home! I took them to the vet to see if they were microchipped- they weren't! We put up signs everywhere, posted on lost forums etc but to no avail and we now have Bill and Ben!!! They had clearly been abandoned, they were so skinny and poor little Ben has singed fur on one side!

We absolutely adore them and they are such loving little cats but they are so naughty!!!! Any ideas on how to train a kitten? At night time, when they are shut in the house they leave a trail of destruction wherever they go! They have been neutered, have loads of toys, scratching posts etc but curtains and whatever they can get their little naughty paws on seems so much more fun to them.

Any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated!

LOL, they are just normal kittens having fun. I don;t think you can train a cat/kitten - more they train you!!

Have you thought of crating them at night, it must be a metal crate though else they'll rip holes in a fabric one.

Thanks! Yeh that's what I thought! They seem to rule the roost! They certainly rule over the dogs!

We haven't crated them, we tried restricting them to one room but maybe that should be the next step! To be honest it really makes me laugh how naughty they are but they do love to shred fabric! Love them though!

Nice of you to take them on. :) I used to do that too.

I think that if you are worried about your curtains and that, then you have to do it for your own sanity. We just let the get on with it in the room where we kept the white goods - which had nothing they could destroy.

No no Katie...you have it the wrong way round...you don't 'train' cat's/kittens...They 'train' YOU!!!:rotfl:

Have you thought of a Feliway diffuser?...They are meant to be excellent for misceivious purrbabes!

I am utterly delighted that your family have adopted these darling little waifs. Kittens have (almost) boundless energy, hence their potential for joyful destruction! My advice? Play with them A LOT and tire them out!!!!! Give them cat trees, cardboard boxes, strewn newspapers and catnip cigars and somewhere that's safe to gallop around in! They won't be this overly energetic for long so make the most of it! Get out the camcorder!
Yes, do shut them in a safe room overnight but with plenty of toys and distractions for them to play with. When they are old enough (and neutered) to venture outside safely (if you decide to let them) they'll lose much of that pent up energy.

Please post some photos! We love kittens!

    Thanks everyone!

Here's some photos from when we just got them home and they decided the dog's basket was now their property! Poor dog wasn't too impressed....

I think Salem and Diablo would have been more appropriate names!
Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.

Just be grateful they only shred fabric - ours put a large number of holes in our water bed, which I had to patch up with sticky tape and a dinghy repair kit until the new mattress arrived. At over £500 that wasn't very money saving!!!

They are adorable as as somebody told me when I got my black cat, they are devils in disguise :) it is normal kitten behaviour, mine loves swinging from the curtains in the evening. She also loves the light weight practice golf balls and pens/straws to play with.

    Good luck

My MIL came to stay with an inflatable guest bed... cat decided it was a good place to sleep - sure you can work out the rest of it.
