xp search not working

Hi xp my search has stopped responding and i've had to download an alternative.
There are no warning boxes and everything else seems ok....the little dog just sits and sits and......:D
Task manager shows it as not responding......any clues from you techie wizards please???
Maybe a download to fix it?;)

A Google search suggests this

. Log on to the computer by using an account with administrator
permissions.
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install. This
reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses.

When you're prompted for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or
point to Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder

Thanks but I can't see the inf file there or the i386 folder....would they be hidden?
