Within their own boundaries (and I mean well within them, not bang up against the plot edge) people have the right to garden as they see fit. Yes I'm aware of the right for neighbours to demand the council enforces a tree cutback order - but that's for huge hedges right on the edge.

Our same neighbour who moans about our 7-8 metre hazels has a 20 metre oak tree which if he cut it down would mean he gets the sun he says he wants.

It's do as I say but not as I do?

If you get on with the neighbours, ask if you can go round to their garden and see the effect your trees are having on their property.

You can then decide whether you think they're just moaning about nothing or have a genuine issue.

Your trees will never look the same again if they are cut back a lot. I really dislike the look of pruned-back conifers. If you think the neighbours have a point perhaps you could achieve harmony by taking one tree out and planting something smaller.

theirs a our drive in between their proerty and ours. they dont block any light to them at all, im so sick of the hassle and threats

In that case, just ignore them and enjoy your trees.

I'll bet there's plenty of birds in them now looking for nesting sites and you wouldn't be allowed to do work on them during the bird breeding season anyway.

13 ft doesn't seem very far to me.
The one bit of advice I always give everyone, whether they want it or not, is that whatever you do, you want to try very hard to get on with your neighbours. You don't have to like them, but getting on reasonably makes living somewhere great that could be a nightmare sometimes.

I can't comment on this particular case without knowing a whole lot more and seeing it myself.

How large were the trees when your neighbours bought their property?

I am half inclined to point out that if you do have work done the neighbour should pay, but you don't really want them to get the idea they are in charge or can instruct workmen to do whatever they want in your garden.

Its not just the 13 feet but there is also a driveway between the trees and the neighbours.

we had v. large leylandeii here, and its fair to say a good ten-15 feet either side of the ground was parched and no good for gardening but you can't garden on a driveway.

I'm in agreement with you about keeping neighbours on side though.
