Vista Service Pack 2

Is it necessary to install the Service Pack 2 for Vista on my Dell desktop? I had great trouble installing Vista Service Pack 1 and eventually had professional help with it. I have now got it installed and all the updates issued since Vista 1. Just wondered if Service Pack 2 was necessary and are there any diificulties with the installation?

Yes, without it your system is not secure. It's a bit late now though, as SP2 should have been installed on release back in May 2009. Vista SP1 was released in Feb 2008, so you are running about 3 years behind it seems.
Have you not got Windows Updates set to accept the updates automatically?

Windows Updates are set to inform me but not automatically install. Is Service Pack 2 easy to install?

It's the same to install as any other service pack. Some systems run it without trouble, others require a couple of attempts to get all the updates.
There's no skill to it, you just keep running Windows Updates until it says no updates available, rebooting as required (which will probably be quite a few times, given that you've got 3 years of updates missing).

There's something seriously awry with your AV program if it's flagging up SP2 as a virus!
    What are you using?

after resetting my computer. the first load of updates that came through (77 in all) failed to install. after checking the error code given by microsoft. this was the solution given.

If you've got Norton 360 and Avast installed, then that is the real problem-you have 2 AV programs that are conflicting with each other. Ditch Norton.
