seven months ago we brought a wreck.Hubby says it isnt as we are living in it,[with the mad dog].Had a new boiler, some re wiring, got rid of the lovely pink bathroom which didnt even have a door on it,we have turned the old dining room into a kitchen as we didnt really have a kitchen, new double glazing which we had put in last winter in a snow storm.Love our house and its all we could afford.Has had down sides, living with no bath or shower for a week when we had the bathroom sorted, had the new boiler put in october just as it was turning cold and had to borrow some electric heaters to keep warm.Loads more to do,might even get my new gas fire in soon with new fire place, whole place needs painting etc list goes on,No wouldnt want a new build might like a house boat one day!.

Total wreck here! When we bought this place (7 years ago, 15K), there were no windows in the holes, the bathroom roof was sitting on the bathroom floor and the original bath was sitting in the void under the floor, smashed to bits (cast iron, didn't take too well to the fall). The main floors were flag on earth, no heating, no hot water, not much plumbing, (but the wiring was in surprisingly good nick!) - the first night we spent here we had no electric, no coal and the snow was blowing in through the hole in the wall! Good times ;)

Since we have done all the work ourselves, we know exactly where everything is/how it's been done etc, still not finished (living in one room) because spare money is hard to come by these days, but we have roof/windows/proper floors/better plumbing and are quite used to living in it.

Wouldn't do a wreck if I couldn't do the bulk of the work myself, wouldn't do it if we had kids to consider.

Big plus for us - no mortgage, so we'll always have a roof (of sorts ;)) over our heads!
  • Bought last August, house has had new electric, plumbing, plastering to solve damp problem, windows replaced, new kitchen which I moved to dining room, two new bathrooms, bits of the roof fell off, complete redecoration. Garage taken down along with large tree by the front door.

At the same time had four major illnesses in the family unpaid leave from work and doing 690 round trips to meet up with builders and make decisions. Most decisions I have made I don't even remember making them but in the end I have the house I could see when I walked in the door that no one else could. At the same time the house next door that was in better cosmetic condition was up for sale they moved in straight away and had like me looked at both houses. She came round and looked at the house the other day and I can tell she was gutted, she just couldn't see what I could, but then again I don't think anybody else could either. People at work and even my own family thought I was nuts. If I ever do it again I just hope it's better timing.

  • Half an acre of Devon garden sealed it for us. House is sound (bar a touch of damp on one wall) 1930s construction but needs....re-wire, 2 new bathrooms, new heating (Rayburns are so not efficient), decorating throughout - including new ceilings - insulating (loft & walls), new guttering, fascias and soffits, roof cleaning, render repairing and re-painting, 2 massive fir trees removing, probaly a new septic tank....think that's enough to keep me occupied for now!!

If I had the money, I would have that like a shot. Personally, I think the guide price is pretty reasonable for the location and with 16 acres of land and with a solid victorian granite building as a starting point for conversion.

  • On top of an old quarry....does look a lovely spot though (but there's bound to be a reason 16 acres is so cheap...)

That is lovely - don't think I'd cope with the stress though!
