Official moneySavingExpert.com insert:

The box of 4 free range eggs for 30p offer's on at Morrisons till 27 March '11. Considering a normal box of 6 free range eggs would normally cost £1.50ish, this is a great deal as you could get 20 eggs for roughly the same price! Thanks to cooking-mama for the tip!

Back to the original post......

Morrisons have introduced boxes of 4 medium sized free range eggs at only 60p a box..good size for people who dont need a lot of eggs,and for family's,buy 2 boxes=8 free range eggs for £1.20...seemed like a good deal to me.

EDTA---For THIS week only they are 30p

    Thanks OP. Got the eggs today.

    And I saw them at just 30p for four free-range medium eggs at my local Morrisons. Not sure if this price applies to other Morrisons.

    Maybe others can verify the price?

    Anyway, here are my pictures of the eggs, clearly showing them at 7.5p each, best before 04/01/2011. Eggs produced in the UK.

    At this sort of price, great for singles, couples, small families, large families, everyone!

    Not sure if they are as good as Happy Eggs, or your local farmer's eggs. Maybe not, at this price. But if you're not fussy about your eggs and just want free range eggs, looks like a good deal.

    Hope this is useful.

    Oh yes, it does say clearly "01 APR". Not the year though. Maybe 2010? :)

    If anyone is interested, the stamp on the egg says:

    1UK21538

    1 = Free Range
    UK = UK
    21538 = Farm code

    That's interesting, especially if you follow the Find Out More link. It says the Lion stamp is only there to show the hen/egg has been raise to the highest food safety standards. Nothing to do with the welfare of the hens.

    Then if you find the The British Lion Quality Code of Practice, it says you can put the lion mark on cage produce eggs, as long as you don't "describe the eggs as 'farm eggs' or depict hens roaming free or farmyard/ countryside scenes".

    The eggs we're talking about in this thread have been labelled as "1" or "Free Range" eggs, so these are clearly not caged hens.

    Clicking around some more, we find:

    http://www.egginfo.co.uk/page/eggproduction

    There is a clear description on what is required to qualify as a "Free Range" egg farm. Clearly farmers can just follow the rules and still care nothing about the welfare of the chickens; if we don't trust them, we can simply go to our local egg farmer.

    In fact, we bought a dozen pullet eggs from our local egg farm a couple of weeks ago. They come from organic free-range hens. They were on promotion at £1.60 per dozen, and they were very good.

    This thread is for those who still want free-range eggs, yet are not willing to pay that extra price for the frills.

    I wonder if this Morrisons deal is one-off; I can't really see how it can be sustained without further squeezing the already thin profit margins for our egg farmers.

    I buy free range farm eggs when I am at home but when I live in the city it is difficult. Heck most of the eggs in supermarkets (even caged value ones) cost more than I pay for genuine (I can see the chickens) free range ones from local farms back home.

    That comment is judgemental in the extreme.

    Apologies if it sounded judgmental; I'm not here to judge anyone. I bought those cheap Morrisons eggs, didn't I? :)
