Painting mdf kitchen unit doors

Just wondering if anyone has had any success at getting a good looking and lasting finish when re-painting MDF kitchen unit doors.
The ones I have are in good condition,no flaky bits or anything but I'd like to do them a different colour.
I have no idea where to start and wonder what paint, brushes etc would give the best end result.
Also what prep should I be doing.
It looks like an eggshell finish on the doors at the moment which is what I'd like to stay with but I don't know if eggshell would be ok to use in the kitchen.
I've also never used eggshell before and wonder if it would go streaky when putting in on.
Is it hard to work with.
Any tips appreciated.
Thanks.

i have just used dulux water based eggshell on some kitchen doors and i used a synthetic brush , make sure the doors are totally clean and sand down using 120 grade sandpaper0

after lots of sanding, i used the correct primer and a satin finish topcoat. BQ own brand paint.
from dark wood to cream. took about 4 coats i think it was. maybe 5 or 6!
i used a small roller. and removed all the doors to paint them flat on the bench.Get some gorm.0 -
As Ormus says, use a small good quality roller, it leaves a lovely finish.
Preparation, preparation, preparation is the key.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

When I re-did my bathroom about 10 years ago. I got the bath panel, the vanitory unit doors, and the enclosure panels for the back to wall toilet made at a local wood work place. I painted all of them in just the same way that I would paint any new piece of timber. Primer, Undercoat, and several top coats of gloss. The MDF has never needed any maintenance and looks as good as the day I installed it. However, I did paint it while it was laying horizontal to avoid any paint runs. I gave it a light rub over with wet and dry between coats. I think that I used a roller for the primer and undercoat and a brush for the topcoats(3 in number).I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
