I just saw your latest comments foolishboy... I'm glad they waived the charge for you, I think they are just trying their luck. I wonder how much money they make from the people that don't complain or don't notice the charge?

Exactly, why I have asked the Rep for the Company's policy on this matter.

If he doesn't confirm that they are withdrawing these fees at source, it is worth running a complaint formally through the process as a test case.

Just think of all the people who came to the end of their fixed deal with other companies and were put on a standard tariff with no penalty for leaving.

They complained that they should have been put on the best new fixed tariff at that time, as they were then paying over the odds for their fuel.

The energy companies just can't win.

As with everything RTFM or terms.

:rotfl:you are joking aren't you? They make up a £30 per fuel charge and you think that's right?

lol! so when my mortgage deal comes to an end, they'll put me on a new 10 year deal without asking me, and the same with my other financial arrangements... are you expecting all these companies to act in your best interest?

And yes, of course I read the terms, your post shows a lack of thought before getting on your keyboard!!

..the way I see it is that it's a change to the original T&C I signed, they should receive confirmation from me in some form before changing the T&C significantly.

However, the original T&C (which I only read after getting the fee waived) say:

"We may apply cancellation charges inclusive of VAT of £30 for electricity and £20 for gas if you switch to Online Energy Saver 7 Offer but then cancel your supply contract or switch to another tariff before the 30th November 2010. These charges will not be applied if the supply contract is cancelled due to a home move."

..fair enough, this is why I waited to move to EDF in Dec 2010

    But later on it says:

"ScottishPowerreservestheright, onprovidingyouwithwritten confirmation of the transfer of your supplies to (i) the closest equivalent offer we have available when that notice is issued, or (ii) to our standard combined mains gas and electricity offer when the Offer comes to an end."

..so it seems if they write to you they can change your tariff to the nearest match - although of course your cancelation fee period gets extended too.

Nasty T&C, nasty tactic to lock customers in for longer. A fairer way to do it would surely be to inform the customer that they're now on a standard tariff and that they're paying over the odds.

Of course I was, but it seems to be lost on a lot of posters.

    Bring back the sarcastic smiley

You forgot the 'u turn' smiley. ;)
  • An update for anyone with the same problem....

SP contacted me today and said they would issue me new gas and electric bills removing a cancellation charge of £20 from the gas bill and £30 from the electric bill.

So, if you don't agree with something such as the way these cancellation charges have been applied, its always worth discussing it. Thanks FB for helping me to get my hard earned £50 back.
