Almost certainly the line will not exist all the way back to the exchange, so an installation charge of some sort will apply.
You do not have to go with BT to get it connected, some other companies also do it, however they all (including BT retail) use Openreach to do the work.
The charge can vary depending on the company and how long a contract you are prepared to accept, I think BT is about £130 max.
Bt do special offers from time to time, best check to see if there is one currently running.

But you're right that the only possible way to get a f.o.c. reconnection is to use BT. However, if they say it'll be free, get it in writing from them!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Is there dial tone? I left BY nearly 5 years ago and ported my number yet the socket has been renumbered and dial tone is there (although a message states 'Calls cannot be made from this line'). In my case I could go to any virtual carrier as there is a live connection. Check first, as you may be lucky.
