I want to buy a camera but haven't got a clue where to start. It's just to take usual pictures of family, friends etc so I don't need anything too fancy.
Can anyone help me with any suggestions please?
Thanks.

try
https://www.fujifilm.co.uk then goto the there refurbs shop.
I've had 3 cameras from them, ranging from point and press right upto prosumer.
they are refurbs, but they have great prices and you still get a warranty. all of the ones i had from them looked absolutely brand new.
about £6 for special delivery, you get it the next day.
but once you've got the camera, go to https://www.7dayshop.com for your memory cards and MNiH (metal nickel hydride) rechargeable batteries. they're way cheaper. you can sometimes even get an official fuji case from 7day too, again a lot cheaper
hope this helps
cheers

The most easy review website to use for people who don't know too much about cameras is:
http://www.cameras.co.uk/
What you should buy depends on what is most important to you. Indoor shooting, outdoor shooting, price, shutter speed, looks, weight. If you check out a review and scroll to the bottom it will give you a list of the best rated cameras. Also, on the left hand side at the top you get a price comparison of the camera that you're reading about.
How much do you want to spend?
One of the best deals right now is the Jessops price match deal. See here to read about it:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=290349&highlight=jessops
So my advice is to find a few cameras from the review site that you think that you might like and then go out and try and find the best deal on one of them.
There's a really good deal on the very well reviewed Canon Ixus 60 at amazon right now. £153 delivered. It was over £200.

Another great deal is the Sony T10 for only £188 at ebuyer right now.

Having spent ages looking for a camera bought the Fuji F30. It was £250+ in the shops but bought online for £169..bargain and great camera.0

Do make sure you stay away from cheap makes which promise 10mega pixels etc at under £100.
Go for the likes of Sony, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Canon , Fuji etc.
In my view you will get a good camera from £100 upwards.0 -

Canon Powershot A430 Gold Digital Camera [4MP 4 X Optical Zoom]0 -
We have 2 canon ixus cameras, no idea about how to get the best price but I just want to tell you they are FANTASTIC. I have tried about 5 others (sis, bruvs, dads etc) -crap in comparison. Seriously, you just can't take a bad pic with them.(PS I don't work for canon!)0

The hidden giants (imo) in digital photograpy are Casio. Their Exilim range are fantastic, the memory (SD cards) are very cheap, they have automatic settings that even a dummy could use (hence why I have one) and the cameras have the fastest start up I have ever seen, 1.3 seconds or something crazy like that. Have a look at http://www.exilim.co.uk/
Oh and these cameras are really slim and have a massive screen on the back, couldnt reccommend one higher, and no... I don't work for Casio_________0 -

Canon Powershot A430 Gold Digital Camera [4MP 4 X Optical Zoom]
I bought a Canon Powershot A530 from Amazon a few weeks ago for £95 and it is brilliant (lots of modes, 5MP and 4x Optical Zoom). Good reviews as well.0
