Laptop not shutting down

Hello all

I posted recently about my slow laptop (Dell inspiron 1300 - 6 years old) and was directed to https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2436849

I have followed all the instructions and it's a lot faster now

But I have another 2 issues which haven't been resolved (issues present prior to doing the above)

1) The laptop no longer shuts down or resarts when you request it to. The icons come up and I can click on them but it stays on. The only way to shut it down it to hold down the 'power' button.

2) There is a constant 'Windows Installer' screen running that is trying to run 'sonic activation module'. I have no idea what this is for. Whenever I press the X to get rid of it it just tries to re-install again and then says to insert the disc.

Any suggestions?

post a hijackthis log (and the answer to question 1 if still slow)

re sonic thing, either disable it the startup tab of msconfig, reinstall or uninstall the sonic software, or try the windows installer cleanup utility (if you can find it on the web somewhere)

Or, you could backup your data, and reinstall from the factory recovery partition
