My daughter is having her Netbook Toshiba NB200 replaced under warranty(for the second time!!).

Staples have authorised a new machine to be collected from their store and have returned her old hard drive – an HDD2H25(MK1655GSX). This hard drive has three connectors with 4, 7, and 15 pins – each being a different type of pin.

Can any guru please explain how can she transfer files from that hard drive to her new netbook or small laptop?

If necessary she could transfer files to my Desktop - if we can find out how to do it - and I have an external hard drive for her to use to move the required files to her machine via USB.

Thanks

You need a hard drive caddy information here. It tells you what they are and do.

I have one waiting for me to change out my hard drive thanks to help from people on here. I'm sure some-one will be able to advise you which one is right for you and where to buy from.

That's a SATA drive (power 15 pins, data 7 pins).

As above, get a SATA USB caddy - should be very cheap, as for laptop drives they can generally be powered by the USB port and don't need their own PSU.

If the desktop uses SATA drives, you could install it as a secondary drive on the desktop, and (if the new netbook is on your network) copy them over the network.

Or if no network, copy from secondary drive to external HDD and then connect that to Netbook.

    Supplementary question please.

I bought the caddy and it works fine!

However although all the program files etc are on the old hard drive, I can't find any documents, photos, music etc - which I would have thought the main purpose of returning the old hard drive.

There are 4 large files in HDD recovery - each about 1GB - that are swm files. These were created in 2009. Would the missing data be in these files? and if so how do you open them?

Or any other ideas please? The Hard drive has two drives Data(F:) and XP(J:)

Assuming the old OS to be XP, the folder structure in the Data drive should be

    Documents & Settings
    Program Files
    Windows

Under Doc & Settings you should find the User logons listed - All Users and (Name)

Anything that was in the Shared Documents folder will be under All Users, anything stored in '(Name)'s Documents' aka 'My Documents' will be under the named login

Alternatively, merely search the whole drive for the type of file you're looking for - *.jpg, *.doc, *.mp3, whatever.

Thanks! The old OS was XP

There are no jpg. etc documents(other than sample pictures etc)

I have read that swm files need to be unzipped, could that be the issue?
