Do I have to use XP or Vista with a new PC?

Need to replace my PC at work. We currently use Win2000 pro. Been happy with that. But the PC is not coping with demands it is facing. It's not a memory issue (I've checked) and we are getting hard disk errors.

Spoke to some IT support people and they said buy a PC that will run Vista. Fine. But for the moment I would rather just stick with Win2k Pro if I can. Is there any reason NOT to install Win2k on a new PC?

PC will be running Office 2000 Pro, Firefox/Thunderbird, dreamweaver MX, Pagemaker 6.0 and possibly Illustrator CS2 (overkill but needs to be compatible with our designer). Also will be running backups onto a DAT drive (probably internal).

None apart from the fact that support is now being stopped for the older operating systems. Providing you have the software run what you want
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
  • buy a new hard disk instead.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hello Krishna, how old is the pc? it depends on the cpu you have installed,if its slowing down, more memory does help on intensive applications or you have a lot of things running at the same time.

Also look at defragging the hard drive if you dont do that already, another thing to look at possibly upgrading to a bigger hard drive aswell.
It all depends on what you have whether its worth while doing.
I`ve had XP since it came out and will be looking to upgrade to Vista as a progression so it would make more sense to upgrade the software and get it bundled with a new pc,as standalone can be quite expensive.
    Hope this helps regards M

    Hi krishna
Don't worry about Windows 2K, this is what it says on the M$ website:-
On June 30, 2005, the Windows 2000 product family enters the Extended Support phase, which continues for at least 5 years through June 2010.

I would agree with their advice.... I would buy a PC that CAN run Vista and the put Win2k on it if this is your prefered OS. Then if in the future you decide to migrate across to Vista for what ever reason you at least have 1 less PC to replace.

You might want to give XP a try, though. It does seem a lot more stable than 2000, and once you get rid of the stupid little cartoon interface and tweak a few more preferences, it doesn't even look that different.

Stick with your Win 2000 pro for the time being... Its OK people saying to buy one bundled with VISTA but it depends on what you want it for as there are 4 versions of VISTA to choose from including 2 for businesses (although Ultimate edition seems to be the best all rounder) so who knows what will come bundled with what. If you manage on 2000 pro and are not having any problems then continue with it.. As said in another reply support is continuing until 2010... Vista will be cheaper by then..
  • forgive me but you said it was a pc at work. Surley at the end of the day it will be down to your boss. Personally though if your happy with win 2k and your boss is happy then stick with it

Have defragged, etc. I was told by some one who looked at Task Manager to see what memory was being used when running apps that that there did not appear to be much of a problem with memory. Also re HD we have a 20GB HD with around 6GB free, so don't think that is the problem. Nor sure what the processor is, but here's the system information report.

Thanks, that is exactly what I was thinking of doing. Given that every time a new operating system is developed it seems to demand greater and greater system resources, I presume Win2k will run a lot faster than Vista on the same equipment?
