The nutcases already driving around uninsured vehicles are not scared of penalty points, £1000 fines or crushing the car, so I doubt they're going to be scared of a £100 fine, which they'll avoid anyway as they probabley won't tax their car anyways, and declare it sorn whilst still driving it. All it will do is penalise people who have their cars/bikes off the road and who don't want to go through the hassle of SORNing it, and would rather tax it.
I taxed my bike (£15), but didn't have insurance for about a month, so it sat locked up at my house, I would recieve a fine, even though I'm not riding it on public roads, only because I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of sorning it and sending the tax disc back to get a refund of £15 or whatever, when it would have likely took longer for it to be processed than the period of time the bike was uninsured for.
By the time you wrote this you could have declared SORN online, but I do see your point.0 -

If the authorities want to cut down on uninsured and no MOT cars on the road why don't they use the French system? All cars must show a sticker showing who the insurer is and when it expires and all eligible cars show a similar sticker for the CT (MOT). Then the council car park attendant etc. can see at a glance if the car is legally on the road and report it if not.
While they are at it remove the annual road tax and put it on fuel which the French did some years ago, so high milers pay the most.0 -

You are normally only insured third party driving "other cars", and only get that benefit paying for comprehensive insurance on the first car.
Your logic doesn't make sense.0 -

They're not making some redundant, they are asking the older ones to retire early. Not the same thing at all.0 -
This is so stupid..... but all these politicians do lately is making stupid laws and regulations!
I was under the impression that an uninsured car cannot be taxed, therefore has to be SORNed anyway! So what is the point?
Why do I have to waste even 1 second of my life for their stupidity?
You may argue that the car could have only one month insurance remaining at the time it is taxed!
OK, but why would you have to declare SORN your car (meaning take it off the road) when it is taxed to be on the road?
There is no country in Europe and I imagine no country in the world where the car has to be insured to be parked on the road!
What about the poor people who live in apartments and/or have no private parking? Could they not possibly go for a few months vacation and save paying the money for these months insurance? I do sometimes so don't laugh, but thank god I can fit 4 cars in my driveway. Why we have to be deprived of our freedom?
In an even more serious situation, could someone not simply leave the car on the road for a couple of months because they are out of a job and have no money to cover the insurance for these months, or not need the car for a few months, or any other reason he/she will want to do this? If it is taxed...why not park it on the road? Why forcing them to pay the insurance they don't need or pay for parking off the road, and declare it SORN?
By the way do you have to return the tax disc to the DVLA,wasting more of your time, and then wasting even more time re-issuing it when you want to drive the car again!
Seems to me like targeting the poor people once again!!!
And on top wasting government resources, as somebody will have to process all these applications etc etc...who will pay? the innocent driver / tax payer!!
What is coming up next is probably we will need insurance to walk on the pavement, and we will be automatically fined if not, because we did not declare we will stay home!
Nooooo... we cannot do this the politician will say! But we will probably come up with a plan, where you will have to pay tax to ride and park your push-bike on public roads!
Its all possible in this country for what I know!
Why all this mess? Why, when the solution could be so much simpler?
Why don't they make the system like most if not all Europe has it? The car is insured and can be driven by anybody with a license. Oh yes because Europe is stupid and UK the smart one!
Oh, we cannot do that (some insurance guy would argue) because the premium is based on the drivers age points etc etc....
OK, Insure the car based on the main owner/driver....and put limits to who is driving it...simple! For example charge more if drivers under 25, drivers with points, claims etc etc are to be included. If somebody wants their 18 old son to drive it ...then pay more!!
This way all cars driven would have to be insured and even displaying insurance certificate on the windscreen (Like in Europe), without any excuse! Anybody could then see and report an uninsured car... and even automated cameras could be used to track uninsured cars! If a camera record an uninsured car driven, the police could be notified and go check who's driving it.
I personally have 2 cars belonging to my sisters on my driveway, because my sisters only spent 4-5 month a year in the UK. The cars are kept taxed and MOTed, so I can take them for a drive every so on, to keep the components lubricated, charge the batteries and renew the petrol in the tanks. We only insure them for 6 month periods, when my sisters are here and we save around £1000 for both cars this way.
So I will now have to transfer all these cars to my name and add them to my own insurance! and my sisters can be additional drivers!
Hmmm....this will probably work out around the same...as i will declare the 2 cars for social and pleasure only! Maybe cheaper...because I remember when I was a biker (and very young), insuring 3 bikes cost me just £100 more than insuring just 1.
Or maybe i should get a trade Insurance and pretend to be a motor trader :rotfl:! What will the law be for cars in trader yards, or simply when temporarily a trader is the keeper?
But this is not the point! The point is they waste all this time and money to come up with something useless, annoy and inconvenience a lot of people in an ATTEMPT (there is a reason it is in uppercase) to stop some people driving uninsured. It will simply not work, and these people will be driving uninsured a car insured on somebody else name!
There.....I also wasted my time writing this, because nothing will change, but it upsets me how stupid the system works in this country!
I better go now and sort out the cars now before we get a fine! Or go register as a motor trader, add my sisters as employees, and keep the cars "on sale" for £200,000 each for ever...because the best is an Audi A4 :rotfl:!
This may be fun, and maybe I can make some extra money too
What a mess!!!0 -
You are normally only insured third party driving "other cars", and only get that benefit paying for comprehensive insurance on the first car.
Your logic doesn't make sense.
It does make sense..... but it depends how you think!
You see, in Europe where i grew up, the most popular insurance is the third party only, or if the car is a bit expensive, then fire and theft cover as well.
People there think in this way:
If I damage my car causing an accident, then I should pay for it myself...why would I expect somebody else to pay? My insurance will pay for all third party damages (the other car).
The only people with comprehensive insurance are the the ones who have bought cars on finance and the bank of course insists on the comprehensive cover!
Now the problem is that in the UK most Insurers don't even offer third party only cover on its own, or if they do, it is as expensive as the TPFT one, and just a little cheaper than the comprehensive.
So If you want to drive a WRX you insure a fiesta, and put the Subaru on your dad's name!
But would the government want to stop this? This is not their problem, because these people are actually insured to drive the car, and the whole think can be avoided (if they wanted) by the insurers by adding a condition in the policies.
Example: "Entitled to drive any other car of equal or less engine capacity, Bhp, etc etc" something like that! They do put the value already anyway....so why not this too?
No....what they want is to put people off the road! It is the only way to ease congestion, and reduce emissions. Who will be the victim....the poor innocent people!0 -
Actually the point about motor traders is a good one. What happens when a trader buys a second hand car to sell on, I assume this will fall under their motor traders policy? If freedom is outlawed, only outlaws will have freedom.0

The police won't have much to do with it, the DVLA have a database of all registered cars, they will compare it to a database of insured cars and one of SORNs, any that don't have an entry in either of the last 2 will receive a computer generated warning letter and have a week to insure their car or get an automated fineWould not worry as we will have no police to enforce it with the cut backs lol
