In spring, or when you cut them down for the winter?

When you cut them back. I didn't (whoops) so will do very soon. I can't see it causing a problem doing it now.

    Is anyone growing Scotch Bonnets?

This is my first year growing from seed and I'm doing 6 varieties of chilli. All 5 other varieties have germinated fine and lots now have their first true set of leaves but the Scotch Bonnets have only gotten to the stage where the little loop has started poking out of the compost then completely stopped growing and shrivelled up and died. They never even made it to the seed leaf stage.

I've treated all the varieties exactly the same - as soon as they show any sign of life I've taken them out of the propagator and moved to a relatively cool windowsill. Do the Scotch Bonnets need to be kept in a warmer place than other types maybe?

Thanks for any help - was looking forward to a ready supply of Scotch Bonnets for all the jerk chicken I was planning to make this summer on the BBQ!

Sorry, can't really help you with the Scotch Bonnet seeds. Some varieties germinate faster and with more success than others. I planted 15 Jalapeños this year at the same time in the same heated propagator as 6 Nagas. I've got 14 Jalapeños seedlings and 1 Naga.

I don't want to dash your expectations, but I bought Scotch Bonnets seedlings from B&Q at about this time last year. They had about 4 weeks of growth on them but didn't produce nice red chillies until late August and that was in a greenhouse. Chillies take a long time to produce fruit so expecting them to be ready for the BBQ may be a bit hopeful. Of course you can dry or freeze them really for the following summer.

Oh, thanks for letting me know. I was probably a bit late on the Scotch Bonnets anyway as they were a bit of an afterthought but some of the others I sowed in late January so hopefully they'll ripen in time for the summer (if we have one). I'll just have to buy my Scotch Bonnets in the supermarket
