Just checked my receipt , I had bought tights marked £5.96, savings were £1.49 then £5.37, girl behind the counter was totally confused but did not question it.
Cool. Get Sainsbury's to pay us... Maybe I get my own back on them for the LOTR fiasco :) Which Edinburgh Sainsburys did you try ?

Could've been additional 25% off the original price.

Sainsburys did this at Christmas. They had sausage meat, which wasn't selling very well, so system-reduced it from £1.69 to 50p - effectively the system scanned it at £1.69 but then applied a reduction of £1.19. Still they didn't sell, so they manually reduced them down to 19p. So, the cashier had to input the new 19p price then scan the barcode, which had the further reduction of £1.19 linked to it. Hence - I got paid £1 for each packet of sausage meat I took away.

My freezer's still jam packed with the stuff :D and so's my mum's ;)

If you must be critical, I doubt that your English teacher would have been proud of you if you insist on putting apostrophes into plurals!

Then again Mr_Meldrew your English teacher may also be wondering where they went wrong !

The apostrophe does seem to be in a place where there are missing letters !

    mathEMATICs

    So not necessarily wrong !

  • Which socks were these? I have just popped down to my local Sainsbury and could not see any offer signs. I took two sets to the checkout, and they both scanned at full price.

Not to be pedantic but since when was Math's plural and of what?
Math's to my knowledge is an abbreviation of Mathematics and therefore worthy of an apostrophe unlike the capital letter M I have adorned it with just to annoy anyone who cares that much about it.

Math is the (Oxford English) colloquial abbreviation of mathematics, which is itself singular. Maths (not a proper word) would therefore be more than one math and math's is the possessive! It is probably the case that mathematics is a collective noun and therefore could never have a plural (getting a bit heady for me)

You are quite right, the original post did not infer that the word math's was a plural, I assumed that only because it certainly could not have been possessive.

However, what has this to do with the price of socks (although more interesting, I'm sure). Thanks for the interaction!! I will write no more on this subject in case we get hounded off the board!!!

    cheers guys & gals
