Funeral plan

Just wondering if anyone has been through this situation and could offer any advice. Thank you.

My late brother-in-law had a funeral plan with AXA Sun Life which we were not aware of until after the funeral was arranged. We have been informed by AXA that they will only pay part of the funeral cost because the funeral wasn't arranged through Dignity. The funeral company we chose was not on their list but, bearing in mind that we did not know about this policy at the time of my brother-in-law's death, how could we have known which company to choose?

After finding out about the policy after my brother-in-law's death we telephoned AXA and the lady we spoke to said that it didn't matter that we hadn't chosen a Dignity-specified funeral company. Nothing was said about only receiving partial payment. However AXA are now saying this is wrong and that only a partial payment will be paid.

Not AXA's fault though that you didnt know.

It is important that those responsible for sorting affairs know where to find documents etc so this sort of situation doesnt occur.

Its not exactly wrong. It was an omission that gives a technically correct response but not a full response. However, as the beneficiary was never entitled to the full amount, there is no claim that can be made to say it should be paid.

Alway use an independent funeral director. Funeral plans can be tailor made to your requirements and usually cheaper than the big corporate firms.
