It's for brooms and mops - you put the handle between the ball/roller and the flat side, and gravity and friction make the ball roll until it grips the item - however, it's not always strong enough IME

We have similar one of these - was in the house when we moved in. It is ok - sometimes the broom drops to the floor, but it holds things most of the time.
Although, I think I would just go with hooks next time.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0 -
