Going back to work..

Hi.

I seen my JSA advisor about an idea for a website i wish to setup and maybe down the road turn into a buisness. She was very helpfull and arranged for a buisness advisor to call me to see if she thought my idea was viable. After a call to her she agreed it could be worth pursuing and has said she will have me in to draw up a business plan.

She mentioned a couple of schemes that she thought i maybe entitled to for the first year of startup. One was In work credits and the second was a back to work grant. She couldn't advise me further as she wasn't sure if these schemes still run and told me to make an appointment with a lady from the jobcentre who's number she gave me. She did however mention that i can get a £250 back to work payment and also the scheme takes me off signing on but i receive a £40 a week payment for the first year. She has also mentioned i can get working tax credits which should help too.

As i am not due to see my advisor for a couple of weeks i was wondering if any of you know anything about these schemes and if they are still running will they be affected with the forthcoming goverment cutbacks..?. One other question is will this affect my housing benefit..? I did a run through entitled to with me being self employed but not receiving a salary ( i plan to run the website free for at least six months) and it came up with me being entitled to full housing benefit. Is that correct..?

Take a look at the link

I thought the £40 payment was for going into paid work with an employer.

There is/was another scheme which pays £50 pw for the first 16 weeks for people going into self employed.

I would consider your circumstances before starting the business if you intend to work for nothing in the first 6 months due to working tax credits being based on paid or expected to be paid for work undertaken.

HB/CTB There will probably be awkward questions into how you can run a business and not receive payment/wages.

Do you have savings to live on for the first 6 months.
Forums can be/are a good guide to entitlement and it is good practice to back it up with clarification from the relevant department/specialist with written confirmation to safeguard yourself.

I should have said that i am a single parent if that matters...? I am not sure to be honest if HB will actually be a problem. i do plan to move at the end of may back to my parents so my expences will drop to basically zero.

Hb and ctb will be paid based on a nil income, as it does normally take a while to generate an income from a new start up business. You can however provide predicted earnings and have hb and ctb paid on this. This will also prevent any overpayments happening

After 6 months your claim will be reviewed.

    Hi Orville

Thanks to Roger Black who posted this on another query, it related to starting a business and claiming IS/JSA:

For full info on this read http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/dmgch27.pdf

    See 'New businesses
27069 A person may start up a new business
    1.
at the same time as claiming JSA or IS or
    2.
whilst in receipt of JSA or IS.
The DM should consider if that person has started remunerative work.
27070 If the work is not remunerative work no income should be taken into account until the S/E earner starts to receive actual earnings. When the first payment of earnings is received the DM should use the assessment period

    Thanks Orville,

I was thinking you may be better thinking of this route until your business is off the ground and good luck in your new venture if that's the route you take.

Well i am not going to get to ahead of myself, i will take it slowly with the site, wait till word spreads and myself do all the handing out of leaflets etc and do my best to promote it. After time if/when it becomes popular i will then start to introduce things onto the site such as local buisness ad's to gain revenue from it.
