Car insurance for 18 year old son

We have been searching for car insurance for my 18 year old son who has recently passed his driving test. Quotes in the £1,000s as expected. At the moment he is insured as a named driver on our Fiesta which is about 10 years old and 1,000cc, worth maybe £500. Third Party, Fire & Theft is costing around £750. (My wife and I have been driving for over 25 years!) If he stays on this set-up, is he earning any no claims bonus or does he have to be the proposer on a policy to earn no build-up his no claims bonus? Thanks.

To get "proper" NCD (accepted by all insurers) he needs to be the policyholder.
Some insurers (eg direct line) will give their own "NCD" to named drivers which they can subsequently use when buying a policy of their own with the same insurer.0
